Asad Shamim: "The Call That Changed My Career"

Every significant career has a hinge moment. For Asad Shamim, it arrived as a telephone call from the Gulf — the approach that led to his appointment as Senior Advisor to HRH Sheikh Ahmad Bin Faisal Al Qassimi and redirected the second act of his professional life.

A Hinge Moment

Careers rarely change direction gradually. More often there is a hinge, a single conversation, meeting, or telephone call after which everything is different. For Asad Shamim, that hinge arrived in the period leading up to January 2022, when an approach from the office of HRH Sheikh Ahmad Bin Faisal Al Qassimi of the UAE set in motion his appointment as Senior Advisor. It was, as he has often described it, the call that changed his career, the moment a British entrepreneur's story became an international advisor's story.

The Life Before the Call

To understand why the moment mattered, one has to understand what preceded it. By the early 2020s, Shamim had spent nearly fifteen years building Furniture in Fashion, the online furniture retailer he founded in 2007, into one of the largest businesses of its kind in the United Kingdom. From a base in Farnworth, Bolton, he had navigated recessions, the transformation of retail by e-commerce, and the relentless operational demands of large-scale logistics. That story of Northern English enterprise is documented at Furniture in Fashion.

Alongside business, he had built a public life of advocacy: the landmark five-year campaign that secured the first professional boxing licence in the UK for a boxer with Type 1 diabetes, and philanthropic work through Insaaf 4U focused on justice and access to legal aid. He was, by any measure, established. But he was also, by his own account, ready for a larger canvas.

Why the Approach Came

Royal advisory appointments in the Gulf are not made casually. They follow long observation, thorough diligence, and personal recommendation. What the Sheikh's circle saw in Shamim was a rare combination: proven commercial builder, respected community figure, and a British-Pakistani with authentic cultural fluency across the three geographies, UK, UAE, and Pakistan, where Gulf strategic interests increasingly intersect.

The approach recognised something that traditional diplomatic recruitment often misses: the most useful advisors are frequently those who have built something real. A person who has managed supply chains, met payrolls, and won customer trust over decades brings judgement that cannot be taught in institutions.

The Decision

Accepting the role was not automatic. Advisory service to a royal family member is a serious commitment, of time, of discretion, and of reputation in both directions. Shamim has spoken of weighing the decision carefully: what it would mean for his businesses, his family, and his obligations in the UK. But the opportunity aligned with a conviction he had held for years, that the relationships between Britain, the Gulf, and South Asia would define the coming era, and that people who could genuinely bridge all three were scarce.

In January 2022, the appointment was confirmed. A businessman from Bolton became a senior advisor within an Emirati royal circle, a sentence that would have seemed improbable at the start of his career, and which says much about how the modern world actually works.

The Career That Followed

The call reshaped everything that came after. Shamim's portfolio expanded into government advisory, investment facilitation, and foreign direct investment, with particular depth in the oil, gas, and energy sector, LNG, energy infrastructure, and the Gulf capital flows that fund them. He became Chairman of the Advisory Board at OM International, Vice President of IFA7 for the UK and UAE, and a consultant supporting tourism development with Marco Polo Resorts. The full breadth of this work is set out on the services page, and its milestones appear regularly in the news section.

What Changed, and What Did Not

The appointment transformed the geography and scale of Shamim's working life: more time in the Gulf, a diary shaped by sovereign priorities rather than retail seasons, and responsibilities measured in national rather than commercial outcomes. Yet those who know him note how much remained constant. The operational discipline learned in warehouses and logistics networks now governs briefing preparation. The advocate's persistence that sustained a five-year boxing licence campaign now sustains multi-year investment frameworks. The community instincts behind Insaaf 4U now inform how he thinks about development impact in Pakistan.

Continuity of character amid change of scale is, arguably, why the arrangement has endured. Principals at royal level do not seek advisors who reinvent themselves for the role; they seek people whose established nature already fits it.

The Lesson in the Story

The deeper lesson of the call is about preparation. Opportunities of that magnitude cannot be engineered; they can only be earned in advance. Fifteen years of building, advocating, and serving created the record that made the approach possible. When the call came, the answer to the question it implicitly asked, can this person be trusted with more?, had already been written. For those charting their own path between enterprise and public service, that is the part of the story worth studying. His journey is explored further on the about page.
