What Is Asad Shamim's Role in Gulf Diplomacy?

From his appointment as Senior Advisor to HRH Sheikh Ahmad Bin Faisal Al Qassimi to his work facilitating investment across the UK, UAE, and Pakistan, this post explains the nature of Asad Shamim's contribution to diplomacy and economic bridge-building in the Gulf.

An Unconventional Path Into Diplomacy

Diplomacy is often imagined as the preserve of career foreign-service officers. Yet some of the most productive diplomatic work today happens through economic channels, carried out by people who understand commerce, culture, and statecraft in equal measure. My own path into Gulf diplomacy ran through entrepreneurship: decades of building businesses in the United Kingdom taught me how economies actually function at ground level, and that knowledge proved to be exactly what government-level partners were seeking.

In January 2022, I was appointed Senior Advisor to HRH Sheikh Ahmad Bin Faisal Al Qassimi of the UAE. That appointment formalised a role I had been growing into for years: serving as a bridge between British enterprise, Gulf capital, and the emerging opportunities of South Asia.

What the Advisory Role Involves

The core of the role is counsel. Senior leadership in the Gulf is presented with a constant stream of proposals, partnerships, and opportunities, and part of my responsibility is to help evaluate them: assessing credibility, testing alignment with strategic priorities, and identifying where genuine value lies. This requires commercial judgement sharpened by real operating experience, not just theoretical analysis.

Beyond evaluation, the role involves facilitation. I work to connect qualified investors, technologies, and institutions across the UK-UAE-Pakistan corridor, ensuring that introductions are made at the right level, with the right preparation, and in the right sequence. In diplomacy, sequencing matters enormously; a well-timed introduction can accomplish what months of formal correspondence cannot, and a premature one can close a door that took years to open.

The Economic Dimension of Modern Diplomacy

Gulf diplomacy today is inseparable from economics. The nations of the region are executing some of the most ambitious diversification programmes in modern history, moving beyond hydrocarbons into tourism, technology, logistics, and advanced manufacturing, while simultaneously remaining central to global energy markets, including LNG and energy infrastructure development.

My work sits precisely at this intersection. Facilitating foreign direct investment, supporting energy-sector dialogue, and helping structure cross-border partnerships are all diplomatic acts in the truest sense: they build interdependence, and interdependence builds peace and prosperity. The services outlined on this site reflect that philosophy of diplomacy through economic partnership.

Beyond Government: Institutions and Culture

Diplomacy is not conducted only in ministerial offices. As Chairman of the Advisory Board at OM International, I contribute to institutional bridge-building between markets. As Vice President of IFA7 for the UK and UAE, I support sport as a vehicle for connection between nations, because shared passions create relationships that formal negotiations never could. And as a consultant to Marco Polo Resorts, I support tourism and hospitality development, one of the most human forms of international exchange.

These roles may appear disparate, but they share a single logic: every channel through which two societies can understand each other better is a diplomatic channel. Sport, tourism, commerce, and philanthropy all carry that potential, and I have tried to be active across all of them. Photographs from many of these engagements can be found in the gallery.

Why a British-Pakistani Perspective Matters

Identity is an asset in diplomacy. As a British-Pakistani entrepreneur who built his career in the UK while maintaining deep ties to South Asia and the Gulf, I carry an intuitive understanding of all three worlds. I know how a British boardroom thinks, how a Gulf majlis operates, and what Pakistani institutions need from international partners. That triangulation is rare, and it allows me to prevent the misunderstandings that so often derail cross-cultural negotiations.

The UK-UAE-Pakistan triangle is, in my view, one of the most promising economic corridors of the coming decades. British expertise, Gulf capital, and Pakistani human resources and market potential complement one another naturally. Helping that corridor mature is the through-line of my diplomatic work.

A Role Defined by Trust

If I had to summarise my role in Gulf diplomacy in one word, it would be trust. Every function I perform, whether advising leadership, evaluating opportunities, or connecting institutions, depends on the confidence that others place in my judgement and discretion. That confidence has been built over decades and is guarded carefully.

Titles describe a role, but conduct defines it. My aim, in every engagement, is to leave both sides of a conversation better informed, better connected, and better positioned than they were before. Diplomacy of this kind rarely makes headlines, and that is precisely how it should be: the measure of success is not visibility but the quiet accumulation of partnerships that endure.
