What's Next for Asad Shamim in UK-UAE Relations?

After years of building bridges between British enterprise and Gulf leadership, Asad Shamim is entering a new phase of his advisory career. This post looks at the foundations of his UK-UAE work, the priorities shaping his agenda, and where his focus is heading next.

A Relationship Built Over Years, Not Meetings

Cross-border advisory work is often misunderstood as a business of introductions, a handshake here, a business card there. Anyone who has genuinely operated between London and the Gulf knows better. Durable UK–UAE relationships are built over years of consistent presence, delivered commitments, and cultural fluency that cannot be improvised. That long-game approach has defined Asad Shamim's career, from his roots as a British entrepreneur to his appointment in January 2022 as Senior Advisor to HRH Sheikh Ahmad Bin Faisal Al Qassimi of the UAE.

That appointment marked a turning point, formal recognition that a businessman from Bolton had earned a seat at the table where Gulf leadership discusses investment, partnerships, and international cooperation. The question people now ask is a natural one: what comes next?

The Foundation: Enterprise First, Advisory Second

To understand where Asad Shamim is heading, it helps to understand how he arrived. Long before the advisory titles, he was building Furniture in Fashion, the online furniture retailer he founded in 2007 that grew into one of the largest in the UK. That grounding in real commerce, supply chains, customers, margins, and the unglamorous discipline of e-commerce logistics, is what distinguishes his advisory style. He speaks to investors and officials as someone who has actually run a business at scale, not as an intermediary reciting talking points.

The same practical instinct runs through his other roles: Chairman of the Advisory Board at OM International, Vice President of IFA7 for the UK and UAE, and consultant to Marco Polo Resorts on tourism and hospitality development. Each role connects a different sector, trade, sport, hospitality, but all of them run along the same UK–Gulf axis.

Priorities for the Road Ahead

Several themes are shaping the next phase of his UK–UAE agenda. The first is investment facilitation with substance. The bilateral relationship has no shortage of announcements; what it needs is more completed transactions, and Asad Shamim's focus is on shepherding genuine opportunities, in property, hospitality, energy, and technology, from introduction through to execution. His advisory services are increasingly structured around that full journey rather than the first meeting alone.

The second theme is broadening the map. UK–UAE conversations tend to gravitate toward London and Dubai, but he has long argued that the most compelling opportunities often sit outside the obvious centres, in the UK's northern cities, where his own business story began, and in the UAE's emirates beyond Dubai, where development ambitions are substantial and competition for partnership is less crowded.

The third is the human dimension: sport, culture, and philanthropy. His vice presidency at IFA7 reflects a conviction that sporting ties build trust between nations faster than trade delegations do, and his philanthropic initiative Insaaf 4U reflects the belief that credibility abroad begins with contribution at home.

The Wider Corridor: Bringing Pakistan Into the Frame

What makes his position genuinely distinctive is the third point on his compass. As a British-Pakistani advisor trusted in Gulf circles, Asad Shamim sits at the intersection of three economies, the UK, the UAE, and Pakistan, at a moment when trilateral trade and energy cooperation are gaining real momentum. Gulf capital seeking deployment, British expertise seeking markets, and Pakistan's need for investment in energy and infrastructure form a natural triangle, and few advisors can move credibly across all three sides of it.

Sport and Culture as Serious Diplomacy

It would be a mistake to treat the sporting side of his portfolio as a footnote. His record as a sports advocate includes leading the landmark five-year campaign that secured the first professional boxing licence in the UK for a boxer with Type 1 diabetes, a case that combined persistence, evidence, and principle in equal measure, and demonstrated how determined advocacy can move even the most cautious institutions. That same method now informs his work through IFA7, where seven-a-side football is being developed as a genuine bridge between British and Emirati communities. Tournaments create shared experiences, shared experiences create familiarity, and familiarity is the soil in which commercial trust grows. In his view, no bilateral relationship is complete without it.

What to Watch

So what is next? Expect deeper institutional engagement, forums, advisory boards, and structured platforms rather than one-off transactions. Expect continued advocacy for the UK regions and the emerging emirates. And expect the UK–UAE–Pakistan triangle to feature more prominently in his public work than ever before.

Those following his journey can find ongoing announcements through his news page, and a visual record of the meetings and milestones along the way in the gallery. The story of British-Gulf partnership is still in its early chapters, and Asad Shamim intends to help write the next ones.
